Inclusive research practice methods

Posted 18 January 2023 · Listed under Ageing, Brain, Neurological Conditions, Stroke

We are aiming to make the methods we use in our research more inclusive. This means going through the different research methods we use to work out which aspects of research recruitment and techniques currently prevent people from diverse backgrounds taking part.

We would like to consult with a group of 2 or 3 diverse PPI contributors on practices that might stop diverse participants from taking part. We would like to find people of different ethnic and religious backgrounds, non-native English speakers, and people of a lower socio-economic status to find ways to progress towards interventions and research involving and serving a more diverse community. If participants have experience of stroke, that would also be helpful. We would like these PPI contributors to review a summary document and join a group meeting of 2 hours (including lunch afterwards).

This is initially a scoping exercise that will form the basis for us to build more inclusive research practice. Our group consists of 10–15 neuroscience researchers (including PhD students and senior researchers). It is a well-established group that meets weekly to discuss research findings and general themes across our lab’s main research fields (including sleep-based interventions for stroke survivors, use of MRI methods for assessing brain plasticity, and development of scalable and affordable brain technologies for use in home settings).

The contributors will be welcomed over Teams and receive the summary document in advance of the meeting, which is in person. Formal training is not required.
