Inflammation in the brain, known as encephalitis, is commonly caused by infections. Some people develop severe and debilitating complications following infectious encephalitis. These include death, seizures, and cognitive decline. Unfortunately, we cannot clearly identify those at risk of these complications. As a result, patient care pathways and follow-up services vary substantially across the UK.
In this study, we will explore the risk factors linked to serious complications following infectious encephalitis. This, in turn, will help improve how we care for patients in hospital and develop more effective follow-up services. Ultimately, this can help reduce the burden associated with infectious encephalitis.
