Clinical Research Unit / Clinical Investigation Unit

The Clinical Research Unit (CRU) is the hub of activity for translational research within the Oxford Centre for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism (OCDEM). The unit has eight dedicated research beds, a DXA scanner for body composition and bone density assessment, and a fully resourced laboratory. We also have a fully equipped room to support metabolic studies including ultrasound, use of stable isotope and other equipment facilitating the measurement of a wide range of metabolic profiles.

The unit supports both academic and commercially based studies. Through the combination of highly experienced and skilled staff, alongside cutting-edge facilities, the CRU in OCDEM offers a highly supportive environment, for patients and researcher alike, in which to perform world-leading clinical studies that can begin to make a real difference to patient care.

Currently a total of 45 studies are registered with the unit which are investigating a wide spectrum of research areas across diabetes, endocrinology, lipid metabolism and fatty liver disease.

Staff

The CRU is led by a Clinical Director, Professor Fredrik Karpe and staffed by a full time manager (Rachel Franklin) and eight research nurses.
