Learn More About Our Research

Researchers supported by the Oxford Biomedical Research Centre take part in a variety of events and initiatives throughout the year to share the benefits of their research with members of the public.

Open Day

The BRC hosts an annual Open Day, where members of the public can find out more about the latest world-class research happening in Oxford. Our 2019 event offered a series of public talks, including a panel discussion on how to ensure artificial intelligence benefits patients, and tours of the Acute Vascular Imaging Centre, a unique clinical research facility at the John Radcliffe Hospital. Visitors were also able to meet researchers at our exhibition and try out activities, from extracting DNA from strawberries to practicing knee surgery!

Students

Public talks

Our regular public talks cover a wide range of topics and are free to attend. Recent talks include:

  • Time to wake up: the importance of getting good quality sleep – Dr Simon Kyle
  • Stroke – don’t let the pressure get to you! – Dr Alastair Webb
  • Is dieting really worth it? – Prof Susan Jebb

All our public talks can be viewed on the BRC YouTube channel and upcoming public talks are listed in the Events section of this website.

Science festivals

BRC researchers take part in a range of science festivals throughout the year, from events at local schools to national showcases such as the Royal Society’s Summer Science Exhibition. Most recently researchers from a range of themes have taken part in the IF Oxford Science and Ideas Festival, Cheltenham Science Festival, Abingdon ATOM Science Festival and Brookes Science Bazaar.

Schools

Our researchers often undertake school visits and a number of BRC themes have hosted work experience students through programs like in2science. We also host visits from international students through the London International Youth Science Forum. If you are interested in a work experience placement please visit the University of Oxford Medical Sciences Division website for more information.
