Each year in the UK, about half a million people attend an A&E or Minor Injury Department for an ankle sprain. If there is no broken bones, patients are normally given a boot or splint and discharged with the advice to manage their recovery themselves. Despite this, not everyone recovers fully. Some people have ongoing pain, the ankle remains unstable or gives way again, or they can’t return to all the activities they enjoy, such as sports.
Providing people with a high-quality programme of advice and rehabilitation exercises could help them recover better. We want to design a study to find this out. We want to discuss our study plans with people who have had an ankle sprain to find out how they can be improved.
