Expression of interest: Can weight loss improve arthritis?

Posted 4 August 2026 · Listed under Joints, Other

Arthritis is one of the most common long-term conditions in the UK and affects many people as they get older. For some people who experience difficulty with their weight, this can increase the strain on joints and contribute to inflammation, which may make arthritis symptoms worse. As a result, NICE recommends weight management as part of arthritis care for people who may benefit from it.

This project aims to explore how weight loss medications could support the treatment of arthritis and to ensure that future research is shaped by the experiences and priorities of people with lived experience. We are seeking a group of four PPI advisors to work alongside the research team from the beginning, helping to shape the study design and materials.

Who can apply?

We are looking for adults living with a form of arthritis who may benefit from weight loss medication. We particularly welcome applications from women aged over 50, experiencing difficulty with their weight, and people with experience of using weight loss injections, although this experience is not essential.

Time commitment

We anticipate 1 or 2 online meetings lasting around 1.5 hours each.

How to apply

If you are interested, please follow this link and fill in the form.
The deadline for application is 10 August 2026.

Reimbursement
