Professor Barbara Casadei named NIHR Senior Investigator

3 March 2023 · Listed under Cardiovascular Medicine

The Oxford BRC’s Theme Lead for Cardiovascular Medicine, Professor Barbara Casadei, has been named a National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) Senior Investigator, while three other Oxford BRC researchers have been reappointed to this prestigious position in recognition of their outstanding leadership in research.

The NIHR describes its Senior Investigators as among the “most prominent and prestigious researchers” and “most outstanding leaders of patient and people-based research within the NIHR research community”.

Professor Casadei (pictured, right) is BHF Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford’s Radcliffe Department of Medicine and President of the European Society of Cardiology.

Those reappointed as Senior Investigators are:

  • Professor Matt Costa, Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma in the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology and Musculoskeletal Sciences and Oxford BRC Musculoskeletal Theme Lead
  • Professor Richard McManus, Professor of Primary Care in the Nuffield Department of Primary Care Health Sciences
  • Professor Helen McShane, Professor of Vaccinology in the Nuffield Department of Medicine and Director of the Oxford BRC.

Senior Investigators, who are selected for four years on the recommendation of an independent Selection Committee, receive a discretionary award of £20,000 per year of appointment to fund activities that support their research.

Senior Investigators are members of the NIHR Academy, and as such, they play an important role in mentoring, training and developing the careers of other researchers.
