SUMMARY:Symposium Embracing the challenge: controlled human infection and immune stimulation in drug development
DESCRIPTION:This symposium will focus on describing\, discussing and debating the importance of human immune challenge paradigms in basic and translational science. \nThis symposium will bring together leading clinician-scientists from both academia and industry who are actively running human challenge studies\, developing new techniques to interrogate the immune response and capturing this information for therapeutic benefit. It will additionally focus on the ethical\, statistical and regulatory considerations of challenge studies\, seeking to stimulate debate and discussion around their conduct and future role in scientific research. \nThere is no parking available on site. The nearest parking facility is located on St Clements. \nPlease see the ‘Find Us’ section of the Eventbrite page for further information regarding transport options.\nThis is an in-person event and is free to attend but please register via Eventbrite. \nA recording of the key sessions will be made available after the event. \nThe symposium is being organised by the Oxford Centre for Clinical Therapeutics (NDORMS\, Oxford)\nand the Forum for Therapeutic Innovation at St Hilda’s College\, Oxford. \nIt is sponsored by the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology.

SUMMARY:Virtual Public Talk: Surgery or stents – which is more effective in preventing stroke?
DESCRIPTION:Stroke is the second largest cause of death worldwide\, responsible for over six million deaths each year. A common cause of stroke is carotid artery disease\, which can be treated in one of two ways: carotid artery surgery; or having a stent fitted\, with a view to improving blood flow to the brain.  Until recently\, it has been unclear which of these procedures results in better overall patient outcomes. \nTo answer this question\, researchers at Oxford Population Health at the University of Oxford have coordinated the Asymptomatic Carotid Surgery Trial 2 (ACST-2)\, the largest trial to date comparing the outcomes of the 2 procedures. \nIn this talk\, research fellow and consultant vascular surgeon Richard Bulbulia will discuss the findings of the ACST-2 trial and whether patient factors favour one approach over another when treating those at risk of a stroke. \nJoin us on zoom: https://zoom.us/j/99450712016?pwd=QlIxaEhSNWZkT1VQTUJpTUltRmV4UT09
