SUMMARY:Ten years to eliminate Hepatitis B: can it be done?
DESCRIPTION:Hepatitis B is estimated to infect close to 300 million people globally\, and a third of the world’s population has been exposed to the virus. International sustainable development goals have set ambitious targets for the elimination of viral hepatitis as a public health threat by the year 2030. With a safe\, effective vaccine and widely available antiviral drugs that can suppress the infection\, is this within reach? Using data from Africa\, Dr Philippa Matthews will explore the impact of HBV infection and its current treatments\, and suggest the next steps to help us move towards its elimination. \nTickets are available online at Eventbrite\, however advance booking is not required. Refreshments at 5.45pm for a 6.00pm start. For more information\, please contact OBRCenquiries@ouh.nhs.uk or call 01865 743341. \nFor directions to the John Radcliffe hospital\, please visit the OUH website. On arrival at the hospital\, please go to the main entrance (on level 2\, where WHSmith is) and take the stairs or lift to level 3. Then follow signs to the George Pickering Education Centre.

SUMMARY:Patient and Public Involvement in Research Workshop 1: the long and winding road
DESCRIPTION:Three local NIHR organisations – the NIHR Oxford Biomedical Research Centre (BRC)\, the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Oxford and the NIHR Oxford Health BRC – are running a series of workshops in 2019 and 2020 for patients and members of the public. \nEach workshop will cover a different topic and explore ways in which patients and members of the public can get involved in research. You are welcome to attend as many or as few in the series as you wish. \nThese events are designed for people who are interested in how patient and public involvement can shape research. They will be most relevant for – and priority will be given to – people living in the Thames Valley area and those who are involved with or interested in the work of the three organisations leading the workshop. \nPlaces are free but limited and you must register to attend. \n\nWorkshop 1\nPatient and Public Involvement in research: the long and winding road\nMonday 4 November 2019\, 1.30-4.00 pm \nOxford Quaker Meeting House\, 43 St Giles’\, Oxford OX1 3LW \nPatient and public involvement (PPI) is increasingly recognised as an integral part of research and a rewarding experience for PPI contributors and researchers alike. \nHowever\, PPI in research is not always straightforward – research projects frequently evolve and may change direction altogether. \nThis workshop will be led by Julia Hamer-Hunt and Kome Gbinigie\, who will discuss the many twists and turns in the journey of PPI in a research project from the beginning to the present day. \nJulia Hamer-Hunt is lay member of the NIHR Oxford Health BRC Steering Committee (OH BRC) and Patient Co-chair of the OH BRC Patient and Research (PAR) Group. She sits on the Oxford Centre for Human Brain Activity (OHBA) Working Group\, as well as on the ARC Theme 1 for early intervention in psychosis and service redesign. \nKome Gbinigie is a Wellcome Trust-funded DPhil student and a GP at a practice in Oxford. Within the Nuffield Department for Primary Care Health Sciences\, she is attached to the Centre for Evidence Based Medicine (CEBM). \nRegister for the workshop
